Mr. Johnson is President of Johnson Forensic Meteorological Consulting in Tampa, FL. He retired in 2013 from a successful 34-year on-air meteorological career at WTVT-TV in Tampa, the 11th largest Designated Market Area (DMA) in the country. Mr. Johnson consistently produced a weathercast that was #1 in its time slot in Nielsen rating over a span of 3 decades. Mr. Johnson performed double duties as both a consulting meteorologist and on-air talent during that 34 year period and beyond. From 1979 to 1989, he worked as a meteorological consultant for Gulf Coast Weather Service, which became WeatherVision during the period 1990 to 1997. He founded his own forensic meteorological consulting business in 1997 and continues to work as a forensic meteorologist to the present day. As a consultant, Mr. Johnson conducts research for plaintiffs and defendants in weather cases involving hail, personal injury, flooding, tornadoes, hurricanes, storm surge, transportation accidents, lightning strikes, heat waves and winter storms. During his tenure with WTVT Television his titles ranged from staff meteorologist to computer systems manager to weather office manager. He also acted as a liaison and site coordinator between WTVT and the Space Science and Engineering Center at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, which developed custom computer hardware and software used at the television station.
In the process of obtaining certification by the American Meteorological Society as a consulting meteorologist, Mr. Johnson wrote two theses titled "Development of quantitative predictive methods of energy delivery interruption in severe Florida freezes" and "Temporal and spatial climatological anomalies on landfalling hurricanes in West Central Florida." He has been a very active member of the West Central Florida Chapter of the American Meteorological Society from 1979 to the present, serving as the chapter's President for a total of 19 years from 1989-1991 and from 1994-2010. Mr. Johnson is one of a handful of meteorologists in the nation who is certified by the American Meteorological Society as both a Certified Consulting Meteorologist (CCM) and a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM). He was the 8th meteorologist in the country to be awarded CBM status. Furthermore, Mr. Johnson is an active member of Phi Beta Kappa, Pi Mu Epsilon & Chi Epsilon Pi.
Active in the community, Mr. Johnson has been the judge for the Hillsborough Regional Science Fair in Tampa numerous times, and has worked with the Children's Home through the Pinellas Auxiliary and the Northside Mental Health Hospital Auxiliary. He also participated as a volunteer with the Dunedin Youth Guild and the School Enrichment Volunteers in Education. Mr. Johnson managed the Bert Wappler Scholarship Fund for many years and is active contributor to the Classical American Homes Preservation Trust.
Mr. Johnson earned a Bachelor of Science in meteorology with honors at Florida State University. Upon his retirement, Tampa mayor Bob Buckhorn named January 19, 2013 "Andy Johnson Day" in his honor, and presented him with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his work. The Florida Governor sent him a letter congratulating him on his contributions to the community over a period of 3 decades. Mr. Johnson has been cited in close to 50 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who in the World.
